At Seahaven Academy, students will be taught to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. Our specification will encourage students to develop their ability and ambition to communicate with native speakers in speech and writing. They will be encouraged to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. The Modern Languages Department at Seahaven is committed to a communicative and active approach to language learning, which will allow students to be engaged in activities that have realistic and achievable targets.   All students will develop communicative competence and be given the opportunity to excel.

The study of a modern languages broadens students’ horizons and encourages them to step beyond familiar cultural boundaries and develop new ways of seeing the world.  It helps them to express and develop thoughts and ideas spontaneously and fluently; develop awareness and understanding of the culture and identity of the countries and communities where their chosen language is spoken; develop language learning skills for immediate use and prepares them for further language study in school, higher education or employment.
