Why study PSHE? 

PSHE education helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up. Pupils agree that PSHE education is a vital part of their preparation for life, with 92% of those who have been taught the subject believing all young people should receive high-quality PSHE lessons. 

KS3 Curriculum Information:  

The curriculum is designed to ensure that all matters to do with safeguarding young people are addressed in age-appropriate ways, including SRE (Sex and Relationships education), health and wellbeing and careers and aspirations. The curriculum is designed to revisit themes as students grow older to recap and looks issues in more depth and detail as it becomes more age appropriate to do so. 

Enrichment to the curriculum: 

As part of a whole school approach, PSHE allows students to develop the attributes and qualities people need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. We utilize our strong links to the local community and outside agencies to include guest speakers, external organizations and workshops. 

5 Frequently Asked Questions: 

1. How often do we have PSHE? 
   PSHE is a very important subject, and we want all students to have a vigorous knowledge of each topic. Therefore, all KS3 students will have one timetabled lesson a fortnight. KS4 will have one drop-down day each term that will focus on a particular topic. The drop-down days will include lessons, guest speaker’s assemblies and tutor time activities. 

2. Who teaches PSHE? 
   PSHE is taught by a dedicated team of highly knowledgeable and experienced teachers from a variety of different faculties. Teachers are trained to discuss controversial and sensitive topics and we believe PSHE should be delivered in a familiar and safe environment.  

3. If I don’t feel comfortable with the topics taught, do I have to participate in class discussions? 
   We fully understand that some of the topics covered in PSHE may be sensitive or embarrassing. You are encouraged to express your view and answer/ask questions, but you do have the right to pass any questions you feel uncomfortable with. 

4. Why do we have to do PSHE at school? 
   At Seahaven Academy we recognise the importance of high quality PSHE which supports you to lead safe and healthy lives into adulthood. PSHE is an entitlement for all young people and we believe that it essential in preparing you for life inside and outside of school.  

5. What kind of topics will I be learning about in year 7?  
   During the course of the year you will cover a range of important topics such as emotional wellbeing, mindfulness, health, equality and diversity, bullying, online safety and substance awareness.
