Why study Science? 

By learning science, we can explain the material world and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity. By learning about the practices of science, we learn how scientific knowledge becomes established through scientific enquiry. By learning this, we can appreciate the nature and status of scientific knowledge: new evidence leads to the development of new theories.  As students learn science, they also learn about its uses and significance to society and their own lives. This will highlight the significant contribution science has made in the past. For example, by eradicating smallpox and discovering penicillin. But pupils will also learn about the continuing importance of science in solving global challenges such as climate change, food availability, controlling disease and access to water. Science education also provides the foundation for a range of diverse and valuable careers that are crucial for economic, environmental and social development. 

Key Stage 3 Curriculum Information: 

We teach a broad and balanced science curriculum which means we teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics throughout key stages.​ 

In Year 7 students are introduced to the key concepts of Cells, Energy, Particles and Forces. We build on these fundamental topics throughout KS3 and they form the basis of the GCSE courses.  Through students’ working scientifically, skills are developed through experimentation and problem solving. ​ 

We want all students to achieve a full understanding of the knowledge specified in the Curriculum for each year, and we want this understanding to be retained and developed over time.​ 

Our aim is to provide a curriculum that is both interesting and useful to students, regardless of whether they wish to continue their studies in the science field or take up a science related career.  Regular review of KS3 schemes to include more current topics is key to this.  We want all students to feel valued and successful in Science by challenging the able and supporting those that need it.  To this end, students are offered the opportunity to visit museums and exhibitions, botanical gardens, local sixth form providers and Universities.  We also welcome all STEAM opportunities and invitations, to increase their Science Capital.

Enrichment to the curriculum: 

Year 7 students go on a Science and Art Wakehurst Place trip.  We also have visits to The Big Bang STEM fair and workshops at the local universities.  Our Year 11 can opt to go to GCSE Science Live! 

We have a very active Science Club who undertake long and short term projects, including the CREST awards.  STEAM club links with Maths and Design Technology and Art to design and create products such as robot brushes and trebuchets.  

We welcome visitors in to school to talk about careers in science and introduce students to the fields of engineering and astronomy to name two.

5 Frequently Asked Questions:  

1. Do students study three sciences in KS3?
   Yes, we have a broad and balanced curriculum, students study Biology, Chemistry and Physics. 
2. Do they study all sciences to GCSE? 
   Yes.  Some students will follow the separate science pathway which means taking three GCSEs, most students will follow the combined science pathway which is equivalent to two GCSEs. 
3. Do they have specialist teachers for Biology, Chemistry and Physics? 
   No, we are all trained to teach the three sciences.  Having one teacher gives the students consistency and allows us to build better relationships with them. 
4. Do you set students by ability? 
   In Year 7 students are taught in mixed ability tutor groups.  
5. How can we help them at home with their studies? 
   We offer revision guides for sale.  We have access to online learning platforms.  We have a Seahaven Science YouTube Channel!
