Attendance: attend today, achieve tomorrow

Excellent attendance has the power to change lives. Students at Seahaven Academy with 95% attendance or above achieve 1.6 GCSE grades higher than those with less than 95%.

Excellent attendance helps keep children safe. 90% of young offenders have had attendance below 90% during secondary school (DFE Working together to improve school attendance, May 2022).

What is excellent attendance?

All students must aim for a minimum attendance of 96%. Parents/carers are able to check this weekly by using the Arbor Portal.

Any student with attendance below 90% is classified as ‘persistent absent’ and depending upon the individual reasons will face referral to ESBAS (East Sussex County Council).

Recognising excellent attendance

As a school we want to recognise and celebrate those students who have excellent attendance. We will do this in the following way:

  • Tutors will recognise and reward 100% weekly attendance during tutor time and through use of tutor display boards and the school reward system (Positive 5 points).
  • The school will reward attendance certificates to all students who have achieved the school attendance target of 96%.
  • Reward activities will take place at the end of each term for students who have meet the school attendance target of 96%.
  • At the end of the academic students with 100% attendance will be recognised at the whole school rewards evening.

Reporting a student absence

If your child is unable to attend school please notify us by 8.00am on the first day of the absence by using one of the following options:

It is important that a detailed reason for absence is provided rather than ill or unwell. We will make follow up calls where attendance levels are a concern or if there is a lack of detail regarding the nature of the absence.

Late to school

Being late to school is as damaging as non-attendance.

Students must be in school by 8.30am. Students in Year 7-11 are expected to be in Roll Call by this time. Any student arriving after 8.30am will be recorded as late.

Any student arriving after 8.30am will receive the appropriate sanction. If there is an unavoidable reason for your child being late, please contact the school office to make us aware.

Any student after 9.00am will be marked as absence for the AM session.

Students who are persistently late will be monitored by the Head of Communiuty or Key Stage Director.

Holiday and withdrawal from learning requests

We do not authorise holidays in term time. If a student is taken out of school in term-time, either without requesting a leave of absence or when a leave of absence is denied, then the period will be unauthorised and this may incur a Fixed Penalty Notice. A form to request for leave of absence can be found here or a printed copy is available from the office.
